The requirements

Corbec is a Canadian leader in the field of hot-dip galvanizing, with several facilities in Québec. The company plays a key role in the corrosion protection of infrastructure components and steel structures for industrial, institutional, and transportation projects.

The mandate was to investigate a cracking problem appearing on certain welded assemblies after the galvanization process at Corbec. The objective was to understand the causes of the phenomenon to identify areas for improvement that could be applied in production.

Mandate

The deliverables provided by LDV include:

Finite element analysis of thermomechanical stresses induced by galvanization;

Comparison of different cases according to thickness, assembly types, and cooling methods;

Literature review and validation of hypothesis with physical tests;

Development and coordination of physical tests to confirm the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) results;

Practical recommendations for adapting designs, cooling methods, and manufacturing processes.
